ERASMUS+ KA2 Project – Strategic Partnerships for Higher Education [2018-1-PT01-KA203-047453]
A project conceived by a Consortium of five Higher Education Institutions from four European countries, to contribute to improve the quality of undergraduate nursing curriculum in the field of HealthCare Associated Infection Control (HCAIs), recognized as a key-action area for nurses’ professional development.
HCAIs, along with the increased resistance of microorganisms to antimicrobials, are associated problems with a wide world importance, and no country or healthcare institution can ignore the implications of these infections and their impact on patients, healthcare units and community, such as increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged hospitalization time and costs.
The prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections requires coordinated efforts at all levels of healthcare organizations. The EU Council recommendation 2009/C of 9 June 2009 on patient safety, including the prevention and control of HCAIs, and the European Commission’s related implementation reports, stressed the need for fostering education and improving the training of healthcare personnel at all levels, ensuring adequate numbers of trained infection control and hospital hygiene staff, focusing on key-areas in the field of HCAIs prevention and control.

InovSafeCare Model is an educational model that integrates specifics of distinct European teaching and learning systems, as is a result of collaborative work from different working and teaching cultures, for facilitating nursing students to learn good practices in the field of HCAIs prevention and control, raising awareness and encouraging them to critically reflect upon reality, developing innovative proposals.
In alignment current trends in Europe about training for healthcare workers in infection control and hospital hygiene as an essential prerequisite for the definition and implementation of policies and programs aimed at increasing and harmonizing capacity and training in these areas, InovSafeCare Model provides a theoretical pathway that encourages the student to critically analyze the clinical settings where his/her training takes place, reinforcing the need to develop (singularly or in collaboration) innovative solutions that reinforce the basic assumptions of HCAIs prevention and control, stimulating entrepreneurial spirit.
The final version of InovSafeCare Model, fully accessible bellow, is a congruently integrated combination of educational strategies, with the purpose of strengthening active learning environment, enabling students to be engaged in self-learning, critical and reflexive thinking, with an entrepreneurial attitude, as the active citizens they are expected to be.
The InovSafeCare Ebook is designed for healthcare students for the purpose of learning healthcare associated infections (HAI) prevention and control whose aim of is to motivate students to study independently and to concretize the learning content. Is organized into 12 modules that focus on the key areas and good practice guidelines of HAI prevention and control. The reference materials consist of international evidence-based recommendations and guidelines produced by WHO and ECDC.
The InovSafeCare Ebook includes interactive learning content such as quizzes, slide shows, and media elements. Each module contains competency testing quizzes. Quizzes provide students feedback on their current level of competence.
The InovSafeCare Ebook was first published via the DigiCampus platform, which is a Finnish Moodle-based learning management system. Students were able to sign in to DigiCampus with their Google accounts. The InovSafeCare Ebook has been further relocated into OpenEdu platform, which is also a Finnish Moodle-based learning management system. Nowadays students should enroll through Savonia institute.

The development of entrepreneurial competencies is one of the main objectives of the European Union. In 2016, the European Commission has identified entrepreneurialship as one of the eight key competencies needed for a knowledge-based society. Proposing and developing ideas, exploring opportunities throughout the mobilization of resources, taking initiative and acting are key-factors that must be included in the nursing students’ curricula.
Entrepreneurial competencies are the essence of creative and innovative culture. One of the goals of the InovSafeCare project is to motivate students to generate and develop innovation related to HAIs prevention and control.
To stimulate students to explore opportunities using multiple methodologies like Design Thinking, Problem Solving, Learning by Doing as the 1st step for success in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, fostering the development of entrepreneurial culture in the educational community.
The experience of the team consortium created good examples of innovative prototypes related to the HAI prevention and control that are ready to be shared.
